Finally, this is 14 year old Zakareya (on the left in the photo) and one of his customers (on the right). I have met Zakareya a number of times since arriving in Egypt, both at the Kima field office for PPIC-Work meetings, and at this kiosk near his home in Aswan. Zakareya and his family used the money from a PPIC-Work loan to set up this small kiosk, and to buy stock at a cheaper bulk price. In his kiosk he is able to avoid the harassment and bullying he would experience as a food vendor in the street. This kiosk provides a safe environment where he can sell small candies and grocery items, as well as learn management and supply skills, while still finding time for school. Zakareya has also had much success in PPIC-Work’s photography program. He is one of three children from Aswan who traveled to Cairo to share their new photography skills with children involved in the PPIC-Work program there.
