Welcome Home

I visited the Canadian Embassy and the Egyptian Girl Guides Association’s HQ, and received a warm welcome from staff at both locations (though I only have pics from the GGs). There appears to be a very active and enthusiastic Guiding Movement in Egypt, which I hope to become more involved in over the coming months either through work or personal time. The girls involved in PPIC-Work may be able to benefit a great deal from Guiding, and it could play a key role in recognizing their ‘right to association’ (The right to gather and meet with other children in a safe space is an important part of our project, and an important tool for empowerment as some children are isolated within the workplace or at home, especially girls. This relates to Article 15 of the UNCRC for anyone who is interested in conventions and the like. I believe it makes sense from a practical perspective as well).

Also, if anyone knows any former members of the 2nd Georgetown West Girl Guides in Canada you can let them know their wall hanging is being displayed in the Cairo office (Their “Guiding Keeps on Growing” banner is featured in a picture with the current International Commissioner, Hoda). I was also surprised to find a “Welcome Home” poster from the Canadian Dept. of Citizenship and Immigration posted on a wall. Walking into the office I did experience a feeling of being at home.
